After a day of rain on the scheduled day of the contest, Bambam decided to postpone the contest to the following day. The contest was a benefit for the Skatepark Association International. All proceeds after costs were given to SPAUSA. The field consisted of 15 skaters, Ciara D'Augustino, Apryl Woodcock, Mandy Esch, Hanna Zanzi, Felicity Corral, Ammejay Papelera, Lexi Barclay, Cara Lawton, Melissa O'Grady, Alize Montes, Ariel Lockshaw, Gwen Marcus, Osha Iverson, Rose Bernfeld & Elena Hullis. The contest was broken up into three heats with the top 5 going to the finals.
Heat 1 set the pace with Felicity Corral throwing down some frontside 50-50s and caballerial to axle stalls. Ameejay Papelera took a couple hard slams on a fakie rock and a fakie hang up, but skated through the pain and finished the heat. Little, 6 year old Alize Montes just missed the finals, but put in a valiant effort with fakie rocks, frontside and backside airs, ollies and even dropped in off the extension. Cara Lawton had a couple good runs with some nice 50-50s, but it was the first-time entry into the Wahine contest, Hanna Zanzi who stole the show in the first heat. Hanna came out swinging with huge frontside tailbones, fakie inverts on the extension, fingerflip fakie rocks and lien to tails.
Heat 2 saw some big hitters in Mandy Esch and Apryl Woodcock. Mandy has a big bag of tricks with frontside 50-50s, blunt to fakie rock, ollie frontside grabs and lipslides. Apryl is always on another level and today was no different. Inverts on the extension, feeble grind fakies, frontside airs off the extension, backside disaster reverts and a host of other moves. Ariel "Seashells" Lockshaw, Lexi Barclay, Gwen Marcus and Ciara D'Augostino rounded out the second heat. Ariel, Lexi, Gwen and Ciara put in great efforts, but missed the finals. The highlight of the heat was Mandy and Ariel in a flat bottom collision that looked really bad, but both of them came out smiling.
Heat 3 consisted of Osha Iverson, Melissa O'Grady, Rose Bernfeld and Elena Hullis. Osha has improved by leaps and bounds since the last contest I saw her at. She had some good moves in fakie rocks, backside lapover grinds, frontside grinds and even threw in a little ollie. Melissa is a local and it showed on her smooth runs with nice frontside grinds and frontside airs and backside grinds on the extension. Rose doesn't ride the minis much, but can still throw some mean grinds. Elena was still sore from her strained neck as a result of armwrestling Mandy the week before, but she entered anyway.
The final was hot with the top 5 qualifiers: Mandy Esch, Apryl Woodcock, Hanna Zanzi, Felicity Corral and Melissa O'Grady. By what had to be the slimmest of margins, Apryl came out on top edging out Hanna. Mandy, Felicity and Melissa took home the final spots for the first ever Wicked Wahine Mini Ramp Jam.
The couples contest award went to Ciara D'Augostino and Jeff Petrick.
A big thanks to SPAUSA for hosting the mini ramp contest and to Bambam for organizing another great event. To all the sponsors, a huge thank you because this can't happen without your support.
